Participants of 2015 Singapore 24-Hour Comics Day

Welcome to the party! We have a total of 230 challengers so far.

A note about terminology. If this is the first time you are doing 24-Hour Comics, you are a first-timer and you're in an awesome position to grow and learn about your creative process. If you have done 24-Hour Comics before, you are a veteran and you're in a powerful position to share your experience, to encourage and support the other challengers. Wherever you are, you'll have lots of fun and make new friends!

97 challengers from the public
(46 first-timers, 51 veterans)

  1. Derek Chua (Veteran)

I want to challenge myself to make more varied comics. As a comics creator, I know from first hand experience that creating comics is a very time consuming process. Much of my time is spent producing comics of my main title series and that leaves very little room for exploring and experimenting with other possibilities of comics as a storytelling medium. I would like to use 24 hr comics day to challenge myself to come up with new angles and new ways of telling stories via the comics medium.

Having participated in 24hr comics day before, I know my limits and would like to try to tackle something that is more manageable for myself. This would give me more time to experiment with the medium. As such, I have decided to aim for 12 pages instead of 24 and see how far I can push myself with this.

This be the 4th time for me, participated from home last year (not recommended by the way).

The past 3 times, I'd always accomplished the 24 pages rule, but it is always rough. Cleaning up post event isn't very encouraging, so this year I want to focus on quality rather than the compulsory quantity.

And boy am I happy to see the "Page Count" field below!!! Finally!
I will gun for half the requirement this year, just 12 pleasant, visually legible, enjoyable pages.

I have this story in my mind for a while. It is sort of like a prequel/Origin story for Andimoo Comics. I've always want to do a story behind Andimoo, so that people can have a better understanding of the character.

The prequel will be split into a few parts. I will complete the first part in this challenge. For the next few parts I will finish them in future 24 hour comic challenges. I hope to make this an annual thing =)

I've heard of 24-hour comics but never had a chance to participate - so here I am! I think this will be a very interesting attempt as I often start projects I don't finish and would love to hold up a project I can call complete.

I've always either procrastinated on the comics I wanted to make or only finished a few pages before giving up and losing interest, so I'm hoping this challenge will give me enough motivation to finally finish something. I also want to go out of my comfort zone by drawing comics traditionally rather than digitally. My goals are to finish 12 colour pages and be happy with what I've done.

I have attempted to write comics a few times. I scrapped my first project because I was not satisfied with the quality and the pacing. I have only completed the second project but it took me a year in which a few months were dedicated to plotting alone.

I want to overcome perfectionism and fear of failure that prevented me from completing projects due to high standards I set for myself. At the same time I want to meet more people who have the same hobby as me and make more friends.

This is my first time joining this challenge. I choose to do the 12 page variation and my goal is to be able to complete the project with no compromises. I want to finish this project without lowering the quality of the artwork and at the same time have a reasonably good plot.

I want to test how far I can go with my limits. I enjoy drawing and coming up with stories. But putting everything together in just 24 hours is a challenge and I am eager to try out.

Graduated from video production, there are times I feel like just going back to drawing on paper again. And this will be worth the challenge for me to pick up a pen again and think of a solution to deliver a 24-pages comic in time.

I believe an intriguing plot is important and that keeps the readers flipping page by page.

    Let's see how I can manage………

However being new to drawing comic, I am determined to draw 24 pages. Let's just call it a challenge worth remembering.

I'm participating to know how far I can go. I've never set myself on drawing comics in a span of 24 hours and with other people doing the challenge I could have a different working atmosphere.
This also means that distractions that are normally at home can be avoided. Lesser procrastinating or relatives disturbing you for chores.
What I hope find in this challenge is to see where I can improve on my drawing skills. Perhaps meet other people as well who can share opinions and advice. I look forward to it.

I was brought to attention about this event last year, but i was in my first year of my National service and had no enthusiasm nor time to commit to this competition, this year, i am more free and able to commit.

I am hoping to meet like minded people and through this competition , hopefully make some friends and share in the joys of what comics and visual storytelling brings us joy or thrill, and especially after having so many ideas in my mind , but never fully presented on paper, i will have to push my own personal boundaries and put pen to paper and see what i can deliver under the pressure of time.

I am tempted to do a four hour or a 12 hour variation, because of the sheer physical stress on the body, but thinking back , i think i want to take this chance to introduce charactors that has been boiling in my imagination for some time now, charactors that can probably fill up 24 pages.

Haven't decided yet which project I want to either start or finish:

Option 1: Finish Neopet comic (lineart + greyscale shading) that I started during last year's 24 Hour Comic Marathon ...

Option 2: Start a new comic with the intent of turning it into an animatic to music.

Option 3: Draw several games-related comics I thumbnailed in my old sketchbooks, but never got around to finishing.

Option 4: Character design for reboot of comic I published at 15.

I've been meaning to take on some projects but I haven't had the discipline to take out time from my daily work to do them. This is one way of me forcing myself to sit down and set aside some time (and have fun) to do one of these projects. I also haven't managed to properly make and finish a comic longer than 10 pages, so this is my chance to try that.

I'll be doing a special variation of the challenge because I have classes on Saturday until the evening. So I'll probably come to the location at night and then stay till noon Sunday.

My husband (Adam Roberts) is not an creative, so when out of the blue he said he might want to come and join me for the 24hr comic event I was like yes that has to happen. So we are going to team up for the first time ever, him as the writer and me the artist. We are both new to the global event as well.

On a personal level drawing in public I'm learning is externally outside my comfort zone, so that is my main personal challenge. I can't remember the last time I did an all nighter so I've decided to do the 12 hour version as a realistic goal, but if we survive more hours that's a bonus.

I shall be using the 24 hour comics to churn out pages for Just a Lass!

What is Just a Lass about? ..The plot-

Lass Mis'boules - newspaper publisher's life has just gotten a whole lot better. Reunited and falling deeply in love with her childhood crush, the elusive Justin Pleinsite. But life is not just a bed of roses.Lass Mis'Boules also is a Super Villianess(AKA The Harpy)), who has a ton of issues and one of them happens to be that do-gooder nemesis of hers , Wolf Rayet and keeping said super away from her personal civilian life .Lass thinks it's meant to be with Juston but she is about to find out that love takes work is not just a pretty face nor a walk in the park, and unlike her many inventions is not at all predictable. And most importantly needs Acceptance and Trust.

I aim to churn out 24 pages a year for each 24 hour comic! Believe it, Comrades!

Now being an animations student at Lasalle I've decided to get back on the comic horse and try it once again. I really hope that what Ive done in the past and how much I've improved in my art skills will show in my work. To me winning would be fantastic but at the same time thats not my achievement. With this up coming challenge my goal is not to win, but to bring out the comic designer within me and understand where I stand in the comic world as an artist.

Taking on this challenge for the first time, I aim to overcome perfectionism, my fear of mistakes through drawing, and to boost my confidence of working on the spot. I tend to also have a lot of incomplete work, so I hope to complete the comics through the 24 hour given. This is my first time making a proper comic so, it will be a very meaningful opportunity if I get to finish was I plan out to do.

As an artist without a specific or a consistent art style, this would be a good way for me to practice and familiarise myself with my own work. Also fearing that my work turns out as a failure even before i finish it, thinking its not good enough. I wanna keep going at it till the very end.

    Target page count: 12
  114. Martin Torello Tubig (First-timer)

This challenge is important to me because I want to make a progression in my art work. I have been drawing casually ever since I can remember, however, I started taking it seriously around only this year. I am currently pursuing a diploma in LASALLE that does not relate in Visual Arts, but would like to pursue a Degree in Animation in LASALLE or else where. I have a list of ideas that I've written down and can be applied as a comic book form, however, Procrastination and school work took over. I find this meaningful because comics are essentially a universal concept everyone understand, through powerful visual images on paper. I wish to use the skills that I learn in this experience on how to come up with my own style, yet learning from different people as well.

My end goal will be to churn out 3 of my ideas and put them on a comic book format, with stage directions and environment fully in place. By doing so, I can keep in mind of how I can put the comic into a storyboard form and apply to either film or a play.

I will be teaming up with Elbert Nathanael and Chu Tan Phong.
